Fasting Before Surgery Is an 80-Year-Old Rule #surgery #fitness #training
Have you been told not to eat anything after midnight before surgery? That rule is about 80 years old, and newer guidelines are changing it. Dr. Reza Jazayeri joins @BenGreenfieldLife to discuss where pre-surgery fasting came from: one OB/GYN's observation that women with food in their stomachs could aspirate, and a rule nobody has challenged since. Now his program uses carbohydrate loading, so patients still skip food but drink a clear carb fluid instead of going into surgery fully fasted. Always follow your own surgical team's instructions.
